It's all overcast, and we're going to fly IFR to Jaffrey! This'll be my first flight in real IFR conditions. Dean's filing the flight plans right now. V. v. cool.

Here's another photo, wearing another new $3. Uptown Consignment shirt. I love the color of this shirt. It looks good with orange. I wish I had more things this color.

I guess this is technically a Friday Photo (as opposed to a traditional Thursday Photo). I haven't posted many pictures of myself for a while; I must be trying to make up for it.

Weird... I don't like Wallaby yogurt as much now. I think it's because it's similar to Emmi, but Emmi has a nicer texture. I totally didn't realise Emmi's superiority, since I haven't had Wallaby in a while. Too bad Super Foodmart doesn't seem to carry pink grapefruit flav Emmi anymore. :-(

Watched "Dawn of the Gods" tonight. Once again, this was another episode I was missing in my original B7 collection, so I think it was only the second time I've seen it, and I barely remembered it at all. The more I watch these episodes, the more I'm convinced the missing ones were missing for a reason. I bet the Cool Dude had a limited number of videotapes (they were expensive!), and recorded over the episodes he didn't deem worthy of taking up space. I, however, thoroughly enjoyed this episode. One of those "so bad it's good" kind of things. Very Red Guy. I especially liked the attack vehicle with the teeth. And the accountant dude's sleeve protectors. And the Willy Wonka guy with the neuronic whip. And Orac complaining when they didn't finish the Galactic Monopoly game. But the whole thing was surreal, really. Plus, an especially nice-looking Avon didn't hurt. The poor guy's so subdued since Blake left, it's lovely. Not to mention all those recent knocks to the head.

Speaking of incredibly silly things and knocks to the head, here's a Thursday Photo from today. I'm wearing the new shirt I got at Uptown Consignment for $3. It has pictures of insane birds all over it.

No milt today!!! :-(

Posted at 2:07:00 PM by Laura W. Petix.

Forgot to post this photo yesterday, from Hale's. I think I was too excited while writing the entry, and got distracted.

Feasted on the leftover shad and Profit melon just now. It was 100% amazing. Shad is the best fish ever, and I'm not just saying that out of loyalty to shad. But now I have none left (shad or Profit melon). I called Hale's earlier, like the talking shad picture said, but the lady who answered the phone didn't know if they got my milt or not, and neither did anyone else who was there (she walked around with the cordless phone asking all the dudes in the back). She told me to call back around 2:00 to ask again. The suspense is killing me!!

I forgot to mention in my last post, I think it would be a good idea for May to be renamed Shaduary.

ALB-colored beets on the stoveHere's my shad plating. :-) I served it with lemon and capers, with a side of quinoa and beets (the brains-ish looking stuff with the cute beet tail on top of it is the quinoa). The golden beets get all splotchily dyed orange in random spots by rubbing against the red beets, and it's really pretty. Golden beets are fantastic.

To cook the shad, I put it in the microwave for 7 minutes (with butter and sea salt and fishpaper on top) and checked it after 5-ish minutes, like my mom said. It seemed done, so I ate it! Maybe it was a little underdone (?), but it wasn't sashimi anymore in any case. Shad is very very moist and succulent and delicious.

I only served up half the cooked shad fillet; I saved the other half in the refrigerator. Maybe I'll have it for breakfast tomorrow.

Anyway, I was going to say, I went to Hale's today! I put in a request for a pair of milt for tomorrow (the lady ripped off a phone number from one of their fliers and told me to call first to make sure they were able to get some, as bucks [i.e., male shad] have been scarce lately) (I wonder why???), and I bought an actual real-life shad fillet for today! A nice little one, just for me. When my mom cooked the shad at the Gs' timeshare two weeks ago, she did it in the microwave, and it was really good (and insanely easy). I think I can handle cooking a fish in the microwave, so I'm going to give it a try. (Don't laugh--I have almost no experience cooking animals, since we always eat vegetarian stuff at home.)

When I was waiting to talk to the shadmonger lady, there were two old men in line in front of me! I've never been there before when there were actual other customers. And, a young guy came in at the same time and stood behind me. The two old guys were buying lots and lots of shad. They each bought about 8 frozen shad fillets, plus 10 roe pods! (There was a "buy 4 pair and get 2 pair free" deal going on.) I got to watch as the shadmonger reached into this cooler full of roe and pulled out big healthy slippery pink pair of roe after roe, and put them into a clear plastic bag together, which was soon bulging. They looked like really nice ones.

yeah, I added the shad partI was also very impressed that milt is now listed on the whiteboard of shad products for sale at Hale's. In addition, you can get boned shad, frozen boned shad (very nicely packaged, stiffly sealed in clear plastic), roe, "jelly roe" (the supposedly extra-special kind), and whole roe shad or buck shad. That is, the entire fish, with everything still inside it. Lots of choices! Milt's the best, of course. When I go back tomorrow, I'll ask her how many other people ever buy milt. They didn't have any on hand, but she did know what I was talking about when I asked for it, at least. Sort of... she was a little iffy at first... then I explained it was from the male shad and that I get it every year, and she said, "Oh, I think I remember you!" or "I thought I recognised you!" or something like that. Weird, because I didn't recognise her at all. I don't remember there being female shadmongers at Hale's.

Yikes!!! It's been threatening to thundershower all day (dirty grey sky), but all afternoon as I was driving around, it never did. Just got home and was sitting at the kitchen table eating the rest of my skyr while wondering if it was ever going to rain, and the lights flickered. Two seconds later, it was POURING. Violently pouring. Just, nothing, and then the sky opened. It's super-loud. I looked out the window to see if the trees were okay (could barely see, the air's so dark and watery), but they seem fine, since they're in sheltered spot. Good thing, because I'd be soaked to the skin in an instant if I went out to try to rescue them. Everything else is blowing and whipping around, the eavestrough overflowed pretty much instantly, and the road's flooded. All in less than 30 seconds!!!

Now (about five minutes later), the rain's calmed dramatically but the thunder and lightning are starting. I always forget how exciting these storms are.

Hmm, so I tried the skyr (along with very delicious strawberries). Maybe it's not really yogurt (it's actually a cheese), but it's almost identical to Greek yogurt (aka grogurt). Very slightly thicker/creamier (less fluffy/airy) and with no watery whey to pour off, but these are pretty subtle differences. It tastes just like it. I got the plain kind, of course (vs. the fruity kinds), which is nonfat. (I usually get 2% grogurt if I'm just going to be eating it straight, although I do get the 0% kind sometimes.)

It's kind of interesting to compare the nutrition labels between skyr and 0% FAGE grogurt. The grogurt has 80 calories and skyr has 110 (this makes since, as skyr is slightly more concentrated in texture); they both have no fat, but skyr has 4 mg cholesterol (this is a very small amount--only 1% of recommended daily value) while grogurt has none, and 77 mg sodium (4%) vs. grogurt's 55 mg (2%). They have the same amount of carbohydrates (6 g, or 2%), but skyr has 22 g (44%) of protein!!! Grogurt has 13 g, which is also a lot. Skyr also has 18% of one's daily calcium recommendation (18%!!) and grogurt has 10%. Skyr is pretty darned nutritional stuff. I only ate half the container so far, though. Like grogurt, it's rather intense. Kind of like eating sour cream.

another thing I got at the store today: Saveur Magazine (no, not eels in a bag)Things I got at the store today:

- Golden beets (yep, I went to Whole Foods).
- Normal beets with eXtra greens, because someone else ripped off their greens and left them there with no beets on them (!), so I snagged them and put them in with mine, since I think the greens are the best part.
- Profit melon!!! Aka cantaloupe. I am currently obsessed with Profit melon, for some reason. With sea salt grindered on it, natch.

- Wallaby yogurt in banana-vanilla (!!!), dulce de leche (!) and bartlett pear (!). I can never find banana-vanilla anymore, and I've never tried the other two flavs, which are new. When I saw all the Wallaby flavs, my heart softened for Whole Foods and hardened towards Oats (whose Wallaby selection is very down...hill!). Wallaby just needs to add rhubarb-vanilla, and things would be perfect...
- A weird new yogurt called Skyr.is. It looks grogurt-esque, and it's from Iceland! Icelandic yogurt's got to be good. (Plus I like the packaging.) (Wow... apparently it's not actually yogurt! It sounds good... I'll have to report on what it's like. I will eat it with strawberries, I think.)
- Did not buy any Vosges products, although I admired them a bit.

- Organic lemon ("M.K. Ranch") (I am not really into organic food... but this is a cute lemon, and I need a good lemon for the following):
- Fiddleheads!
- In-season Asparagus (local-ish... from a New Jersey farm).
- Rudi's Organic wheat hot dog rolls.
- Fake keilbasa--for Dean to eat with the above four items, while I am eating them with SHAD MILT. That's the plan, at least. According to my calendar, Thursday is Shad Day. Of course, I'm not exactly sure how this is possible, since the grill's out of commission because the deck's getting stained this week... but... I don't know. The shad need to be eaten.

I'm so so so so so so glad it's spring now.

Posted at 4:42:00 PM by Laura W. Petix.

Aaaah!! Horrible! "Size matters, so does shape under new postal rates." Plus, all these new "nonmachinable surcharges." They're targeting me. I'm nonmachinable.

(And is this new "Forever Stamp" thing for real?? It sounds like a hacker's joke!)
