No dice on the pumpkin ice cream at Kimball! They were all out. They were also all out of peppermint stick (our usual), so I was going to try gingersnap molasses since it sounds autumnal, but they were all out of that, too, even though it was still listed on the signboard. So I got coffee. I lied to Dean and told him it was maple.

[Edit, photos: 1) My lobster roll from Kimball Farm, and B) Dean and Tango at Jaffrey Silver Ranch Airpark... this may be the last photo of Tango before his new paintjob!]

Turned on the heat this morning for the first time of the season. ("Just to take the chill off.") We're going on our very last Jaff of the season today, too. Tomorrow's its final day open! We Really Should get the pumpkin ice cream.

Managed to follow the Pumpkin Injunction tonight: ordered Post Road Pumpkin Ale at ION. (It is Boston Post Road??) It was good! I didn't think it tasted very pumpkiny, but it still counts. (And it was pretty orange.) I also had some pumpkin softserve ice cream (which was very good--nice and pumpkin pie spice-y) at Stew's, but I think it was still September at that point. I hope the other LC members are doing better with the injunction than I am.

Well, hopefully that means he got it.

It's really hard to take a picture of a watch on your own right arm, when you're right handed. But I sort of managed. Also, here's what the back looks like! See! It really is a starfish! I like how it has little feet.

I also love the Mido logo. I want that font!

Oh, wow. There's a picture of a sea star engraved on the back of my watch! I'm not making this up. It's a starfish-looking star with wavy lines near the top, like it's swimming in the ocean with only the tip of one arm sticking out.

Ocean Star CaptainI can already tell I'm going to love my new watch. It's a Mido Ocean Star automatic, and it's titanium. All the other automatic (self-winding) models were super-heavy because of the special innards, but the titanium cancels it out, and mine is super-light. No batteries! Sapphire crystal (supposedly only diamond can scratch it, but Dean won't believe it), sweeping second hand, all those high quality watch things! And Midos have some kind of unique Aquadura cork crown seal that makes them known as "king of waterproof watches."

This is the first time I've ever had a watch with a metal band and now I can't go back. The one thing I knew for sure after looking at all those watches yesterday was that I had to get a metal band. I thought they'd be uncomfortable, but they're not, at all. And leather bands always start to wear out and look shabby in about a year... this one never will.

I have a nice watch. Dean keeps referring to my former watches as "junk" now.

The weird thing is, after looking at every watch in every store at the entire Westfarms Mall (it was awful!!), there were only a couple I even liked at all. One other was at the Victorinox store, where I bought my Mido, and the other was a Rado, at a jewelry store. It was $1,000, which, I guess as watch price-ranges go, is considered on the very lowest end of "high-range," but it's way more than I would spend on a watch. (Mine is considered "mid-range" and it's also a lot more than I have ever spent on a watch. Like about ten times as much as my old Timex!) Anyway, the weird thing is that the only other watch, in all those zillions of watches, that I was really attracted to was the Rado, and then I found this watch at the very last store I visited. Like the Rado, it's also titanium, and shares a lot of the same aesthetics. Later when I looked it up online, I found out they are both owned by the same company! Even though the Rado was really really cool, I actually like my watch better... it's a lot easier to read. :-) Plus, it's an Ocean Star! And you know what that means. Ocean Star = Sea Star, and sea star = starfish!

[Edit: P.S. Wow, it looks huge in that picture! The face is actually smaller than the face on my old watch, which was pretty much the only thing I was unsure about in deciding to buy it. I'm getting used to the smaller size now, though, and I really like it.]

Watch shopping is totally eXhausting. And discouraging. I want my old watch back!! (I'm still wearing it, even though the crystal is completely gone now. It's sort of like a braille watch...)

Now a piece of glass dropped out of my watch. I guess it's not water resistant to 50 meters anymore.

That thing about how Timex watches take a licking and keep on ticking? It's true, but that doesn't mean that if you drop one facedown in a parking lot the glass won't smash. (It is still ticking, though.) My eyes are all wonky today. Maybe it's the change in the weather. It's actually kind of neat how bizarro it is with the focus changing in a blink, but the eyestrain and dizzy feeling that goes along with it isn't completely fun. I am in a fantastic mood, though. And I even managed to snag the very last package of Jinx at Stew's! (That was after I dropped my watch, not before.) The stocker dude claimed they didn't have any, but I found one. I am kind of obsessed with Jinx. I love the crisp smoky campfire laspsang-souchonginess. I think I may have missed the window of opportunity to buy it, though. It's seasonal, and, as the Stew's stocker said, "Those Vermont guys move quickly."

It's warm and beautiful out still. Sat out on the back step and basked. I know this is freakfish, but I'm not complaining. It looks like the weather will turn into real autumn soon, though. As for now, if it wasn't for the early dark and magnificent leaves, it would still be summer.

[Edit: that's freakish, not freakfish. Freakfish seems like it would be a good word, though.]

Low and Slow (actually low and fast!) to Parlin!

Lots of color in the Berkshires. All different shades all mixed up--orange, peach, yellow, isolated blazes of red.

Farms, farms, farms. Incl. lots of pumpkin farms! I think we saw about five. The pumpkins look like orange pinheads. Pretty cool to be able to see individual vegetables from the air!

Followed the Connecticut River, along the line between Vermont and New Hampshire. This was the first time we ever flew in VT, other than going to Uncle Donald's funeral. I didn't know Parlin was so close to VT.

Loch Ness Monster!!! In the CT River! A real one! Well, one I didn't make up, at least. But it was bright green, so maybe it wasn't real real. It was as big as the real Loch Ness Monster, though.

Railroad cars, and train tracks that looked just like model railroad tracks. Lots to see! Too much to write down.

Dean and Maura's refrigerator at the Parlin FBO has:
1) In the refrigerator part: tons of different juices and sodas (you're supposed to leave some change in a basket if you drink them) and, 2) In the freezer: two whole carrots (sans leaves). Frozen solid. Not wrapped or anything. Just sitting on the floor of the freezer, frozen down. Why????

We borrowed the hanger bikes at Parl, and biked to the covered bridge. I hated the hanger bikes, though! They were like rental planes. I missed my hound. But it was still cool. The covered bridge was very picturesque, with a fall trees reflected in still water thing going on that was just like a jigsaw puzzle. We tried the Lil' Red Baron's new ice cream for the first time, and it's good! Gifford brand. I had Maine Camp Coffee flav and was very impressed. The vanilla was also truly excellent, even though I am not a vanilla person.

Using whereas ten thousand times, Connecticut Governor Jodi Rell proclaimed Oct. 1 though 6 to be General Aviation Week in Connecticut in honor of AOPA Expo 2007. She did it on October 4th, Dean's birthday! I think it's only General Aviation Week in Connecticut for this year, though. Pretty cool, but what a gyp! The first week of October should be GA week in CT every year!
