Laura: *puts feet up, lounging in the LAX Admiral's Club* "Check it out--who am I emulating?"
Dean: "Boothby?"
L: "No--but that's a good answer!"
D: "Buck?"
L: *laughing harder* "No..."
D: "Who?"
L: "Raffles! But maybe all of the above."

The meal on the flight from LAX to Hawaii was the best meal I've had in ages! (!) It was invented by Sam Choy. Good job, Choy! We both said we'd be impressed at a restaurant. The best part was the honey-tinged soft, warm rolls. The miso salad with lotus slices & seaweed (+ normal salad ingredients) was also fantastic, and my salmon tasted like shad (that's a huge compliment).

I have to figure out the name of Lilo's favorite Elvis song. It's the one about the whippoorwill.

The first thing I noticed when we stepped off the plane was the feel of the air; then, how dark the sky is.

It's so still tonight.

Our place is almost unsettlingly quiet--it's like we're the only two people on the planet.

It's 12:45 (5:45 at home--an hour before the time I got up this morning). I didn't sleep last night, either. (Not that I was aware of, at least.) But I felt good, all the way up until we started unpacking. Long trip (18 hours??) but a good one. Relaxed.

Here's a video for while I'm away. (I put this together quite a while ago, but never made it public.) Not the highest-quality footage, but it's still kind of mesmerizing. And I like how it ends. :-)

It feels very strange that we're leaving tomorrow. I think it's because of the lack of the kill-myself-getting-up-earlier-and-earlier-all-week ritual.

I'm hoping I'll update at least sporadically while I'm in Hawaii. If not, BCNU in a month!

Slab of shad for breakfast (frozen, from Hale's), sitting out on the deck in the slightly chilly sun. I felt like a cat, eating it. Followed with a crisp Fuji apple and the leftover superthin swiss cheese, watching a ladybug crawl. Not one cloud in the sky. I wore my ugg shoes and threw on my Avon jacket, but otherwise it was just my pyjamas. Nice November 2nd.

Yesterday evening I was totally worn out from packing. Why's packing so exhausting? I didn't even do the getting up early thing (decided it's useless in the case of Hawaii), so it wasn't that. "Mr Justice Raffles" was a weird episode (and the only Raffles I have never read), but Raffles' outfits made his eyes glitter. Best-dressed Raffles ever. Coffee-colored eyes. I like it when Raffles is stern. We also watched the Enriched Air DVD with that scary Nitrox tune, but my brain was in a state of mush.

Tom Petty's XM radio show is awesome! (It also makes superb packing music.) He opened today's episode with the Beach Boys' "Wild Honey"! (But that's only one little reason it's awesome.)

hmm... in my case, this is literally trueBye, Postmaster Dave! I will miss you.

The little party in the lobby of the (very tiny) East Berlin post office was nice. :-) And I even saw someone I knew there! (Other than post office people, I mean.) I also talked a lot to Dave's wife. Dave was the best. I gave him a hug.

I've steeled my heart against Rocky, of course, but, if I hadn't, I'd really be fond of that petite blonde cashier. Her official new name is Spoon Girl. Today I nearly ended up with two spoons again: the cashier had one all ready for me, and the barista tried to give me one, too. She also made me tons of foam, configured like a mohawk.

Good God. (Reading the IN_PROG directory now.) It all just gets more and more crystalline, doesn't it? And Chapter 17! Whew. (As Bunny would say.) Iris is amazing.

I hate how it dissolves so quickly into fragments. I want

[Heh. Fragmented end for a fragmented end. I want MORE. That's all. But there isn't any more.]

P.S. The best thing is when Raffles puts his feet up. I love that.

What the heck! That was not "A Bad Night." (Okay, I shouldn't be surprised.) But "A Bad Night" was my fav story (or one of, at least) and I know it had an asthmatic, which that definitely didn't (I guess they changed the asthmatic into a Dutch girl...). At least it still had the life-preserver. [A.k.a. the blackjack!!!] Anyway, I've got to admit the changes are usually very well done. Especially "To Catch a Thief," last night. (Not that the real ending wasn't much more thrilling, but the adaptation was longer and cleverer and better for the small screen, and it's all worth it to avoid that Mr Maturin unpleasantness!!)

found more Jinx! (I love the Jinx motto, or whatever it is)"Turn left on Mysterio Drive." (Okay, it's really Massirio, but it sure sounds like Mysterio.) Finally found a use for the Christian Lane exit (other than causing me a massive permanently-lost Suder situation that one time I took it by mistake when I was so distracted whilst listening to Rock of Ages for the first time.) It's perfect if you're coming back from a West Hartford-ly direction and want to stop at the Kensington Stupid! Of course, I need my Guy to prevent a repeat of the Suder, since I've been avoiding Christian Lane like the plague in all the years since. (That was back when I used to post on the GB!)

What the heck is this? It does not sound like a good thing, at all.

Valentine. Don't even know what to say, but just, I've been reading Valentine (not Anthony Valentine... Ld. Valentine) and just... oh. I know it's horribly incomplete and will never the finished, but it's really the most wonderful thing ever. Especially the way V. talks. God, how he talks. How could I ever have written like that? And I adore Cecil and Iris and Rupert. Completely! Suspended in ice.

I ended up with not one but three spoons at Rocky today: #1, I brought in with me from my glove compartment (my Car Spoon) because Rocky doesn't have spoons available on their condiment stand anymore and it's always a huge hassle to get one, since I always forget to ask when I'm ordering my drink; #2, the cashier gave me when I ordered my drink, because she remembered that I always come back and ask for a spoon! (highly pleased, I didn't mention that I already had one in my pocket); and #3, the Marshmallow Guy brought over to my table because he thought I was forlornly looking for a spoon (actually I was forlornly looking for chocolate to sprinkle on my cappuccino, because there wasn't any). I guess some of the Rocky staff has noticed my spoon troubles, even though I hardly ever go there anymore. I kept M.G.'s spoon offering as a second car spoon. Swimming in spoons!

It's autumn for real now. Since it's almost November, I actually like it. Plus, it's gloriously sunny, and the leaves are still beautiful.

I mailed a huge box (well, not huge, but big) of contraband items (mostly liquids) to Hawaii this morning, and set up the mail hold. The new clerk told me you can put your mail on hold online now. (But that's not very personal, is it?) She also bugged me about whether or not there were liquids in my box. Of course there are. That's the whole reason I'm sending it. She wanted to know if I surrounded them with absorbent material. What the heck. I'd already assured her they were in ziplock bags! How much extra packing material am I going to put in there?? (I'm a master-packer, and this was a very well-packed box.) It's a good thing I don't go to the post office as much anymore, because all the super-complicated and picky new regulations are slightly maddening. Last week I had to go home and put an extra 33¢ on an envelope because it wasn't bendy enough. I don't mind paying extra, but I hate it when I've calculated the postage using the online postage-figure-outers and it's still not right. Especially when it messes up the whole design of my envelope.

We did the entire winterization in one day, and I didn't even slack! Also, I rescued two worms.
