Arm warmers & alpaca! I love them both.

really CLEAR! we could see Mt. Monadnock from HFD

Kimball Farm's last day = tomorrow / last lob roll 'til spring, and it was a good one / ice cream selection was greatly diminished so we didn't get any (they didn't even have grape nut flav left!) (not that we would have eaten it if they did)

The author (I assume) of Wild Boar Moore and the Four had a table set up to tell people about her book, and I almost got roped into a big conversation with her because I exclaimed "I love wild boars!" when I saw it. (I wouldn't have minded talking to her, but I needed to get my lobster roll!)

"Rainy Day Women" on XM, flying home. :-)

My throat hurts but I have horehounds!

Wow. I did it. I bought my new nano. It was reeeeeally hard to decide which color to get. My obvious pick would be orange, and, indeed, I was all excited when the new ones were announced and I saw that orange was an option (I couldn't believe it). But. The shade of orange just isn't that great, in person. It looks good in the pictures online, but if you see it in the store next to all the other hues, it's just not as bright and rich and intense. It has sort of a metallic look to it. So I didn't know what color to get, if not orange. But I finally decided, today at the store. It's a maverick pick. The salesgirl was really pleased when I made up my mind (and not just because it took forever), because she agreed it was the best color but said not very many people chose it.

When I told Dean I didn't get orange, he guessed blue, because he knew I was admiring it. Nope, although the blue is beautiful, a lot like the blue on my dive mask. I'd chose a sweater that color in an instant, but I felt blue is just not unusual enough for my iPod. Then he guessed pink. Nope again. The hot pink is nice--very very intense. A great color. But I just don't think I want an iPod that pink. The bright red and the lime green are also fantastic shades. But no. I couldn't identify with them enough. My new nano is deep, rich, iris-y purple. It reminds me of the tea room. I wasn't even thinking of it as a possibility, going in, but the more I looked at it the more I was drawn to it, until I knew.

I can't believe our big Sky Trip is only one month away!

I just love it when they look all crystallized/sugary, and when you can see the internal structure.

My favorite parts of the debate: 1) when Obama used the word "profligate" (I love that word), B) when McCain accidentally called his opponent "Senator Government" instead of "Senator Obama" (we were totally cracking up). But no one used the word "maverick"! Aw. Anyway, I decided who I'm voting for.

(I even made a campaign poster with a hand turkey on it!)

As for the actual debate, I have to say that was a creamed Maverick Stew. And all that blinking! Gah.

I like the cute maple leaves with only three sections, like the one on the leftI went on a walk around the neighborhood and it was fun! Crunched through lots of fallen leaves, picked up random leaves whose patterns I liked, went on the frog sproingy and the swings at the park, walked around the cemetery looking at the headstones twice, and photographed my bag. It was about 70° out and beautiful. Oh and one of our neighbors was walking the other direction so I said hi to her and she said, "Hi, honey." Also, listened to "I Still Miss Someone," "One Too Many Mornings," and "Mississippi" (the best version). To get into the spirit of the final debate, I'm making a Maverick Stew for dinner. It's going to include parsnips and a pretty little purple-topped turnip just because those are classic soup ingredients and I have nearly no idea what they taste like. I probably should have bought the burdock too, but then if the stew tastes weird I wouldn't know what to pin it on.

Here are some walk photos: 1) the promised (okay, I didn't promise, but here it is) side view(ish) of my bag, to show how well the edge rectangles line up (I love how intense the leaves look in this one, and it's accurate, too), B) front view of my bag, with Palma sticking out of the Treo pocket (my calendar page background graphic is very ALB-ish and bag-ish), 3) a maple on our road that practically looked like it was on fire.

[Edit, 8:55: The Stewed Maverick was good! The one we ate for dinner, I mean. Dean liked the parsnips. I also made rough-around-the-edges biscuits to go with it.]

!! The cases are finally out!

Posted at 7:55:00 PM by Laura W. Petix.

leaf from NEACWalked out the front door this afternoon and stopped dead, gasping, "Oh! It's so beautiful." I'm over my fear & loathing of autumn, for this year. The fact that's it's been warm has helped a lot. Nice and gradual. 70° with riotous bright colors everywhere is fabulous. It's the chill and the dark that I f. and l. most of all, that famous supposedly-desirable crispness in the air. I don't like being cold. I also love summer clothes (and food!) and hate giving them up. But now that I've had a month to ease in, the F&L has turned to acceptance.

I love the deep green on bottom / blaze red on top trees that are everywhere right now...

More Actual Good Things About Autumn:
8. BRIGHT red and orange and yellow trees.
9. Skinny-sleeved sweaters, once I'm ready for them. Bought an ultra-soft alpaca sweater with super-snuggly tight arms for $24 at Uptown yesterday. That's a lot more than I usually spend at Uptown Consignment, but it's alpaca. It's not cold enough to wear it yet, though.
10. Arm warmers! I finally found non-zillion dollar arm warmers that I love! They're not quite as nice as the $64 (what the heck??? for something that only covers your arms?) cashmere ones at L&T, but they're close.

Are the trees exceptionally bright this autumn, or do I forget how spectacular fall colors are? Maybe both.

Does Tell Tale Signs count as an Actual Good Thing About Autumn? I think so.
11. Tell Tale Signs. Wait, make that #9, and bump the other two out. Oh, and I officially love disc one more than disc two. Also, I think the version of "Mississippi" on "Love & Theft" is far superior to either unreleased version #1 or #2. Both of them are interesting but they just sound wrong (they don't move along right). I haven't heard unreleased version #3 yet because I didn't get the $129.99 three-disc version. I would like to hear it, though.

Yes: "But my heart is not weary, it's light and it's free
I've got nothin' but affection for all those who've sailed with me."

The bulbs are snoozing away, happy. Layers of dirt and bulbs and cow and bone and blood and dirt and blood and mulch. Watered, asleep 'til spring.

We planted around 140 tulips of 12 different varieties (some of which were packages with a mix of colors of the same variety, like a whole bunch of random colored double-fluffy lates). My favorite (just from the pictures) is one I picked out individual bulbs of at Moscarillo's. It's orange and purple!

By the way, I forgot to mention that we followed the Pumpkin Injunction on Saturday and had a pumpkin soft-serve frozen yogurt at Stew's. It was good.
